Format support and limits
Availability means the tool can decode the input in your browser, not that every input has all its features preserved.
Verified by design, pending live browser QA
- Inputs: JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP and BMP recognized by file signature; image decode must also be supported by your browser.
- Outputs: PNG mandatory in modern Canvas; JPEG widely supported; WebP requested only and rejected if actual encoder returns PNG instead.
- Animation: GIF and animated WebP are treated as one still frame. Full animation support belongs to a later release.
- Not available yet: AVIF, HEIC/HEIF, TIFF, PSD, SVG uploads, RAW camera formats, AVIF encoding and layered editing.
- Limits: Up to 20 MB original file, 30 million decoded/output pixels and 16,384 pixels per side; devices may have smaller practical limits.
Transparency and metadata
JPEG cannot preserve alpha: its background is flattened to your chosen color. PNG preserves alpha where the decoded source exposes it; WebP support varies. Canvas encoding generally discards EXIF, GPS and ICC profiles, but this is not certified secure redaction or color management. DPI values are not a reliable physical-print guarantee.
Real compression results
The size comparison shows when a new image becomes larger instead of smaller. A PNG re-encode is lossless but often does not reduce size. We do not claim universal support for JPEG lossless recompression.
