PNG vs JPG vs WebP: A Practical Decision Guide

Choose an output format for the specific picture, transparency requirement and audience.

Method

JPEG is commonly appropriate for photographs but cannot store transparency. PNG preserves alpha and hard edges, while WebP can serve either photos or transparency when encoding is supported. A browser codec can read an image without being able to encode every requested format.

Verification and limitations

Inspect browser support and confirm file signature and transparency after exporting. Animation may become a single frame in a normal conversion.
